Justification for Refraining from Discarding Orange Peels

The concept of actual food waste is beginning to baffle me.

Oils rich in monoterpenes and d-limonene are abundant in the peels.

According to the food media business Tasting Table, they can be used to dissolve brown sugar,

but you can't simply throw in some fresh orange peels and be done.

The next step is to let the citrus zest steep in the brown sugar for at least a few hours before straining it out.

In addition to rehydrating, it has the added bonus of possibly adding a slightly lemony scent.

An additional perk, according to Tasting Table, is that it can give a slightly lemony scent in addition to helping restore moisture.
